History Bethel Church
“So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath; for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God.” James 1:19-20.
“He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently against that house, and could not shake it, for it was founded on the rock.” Luke 6:48.
1938
Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church was organized in 1938 on Northwest 18th Avenue and 62nd Street under the leadership of Rev. L. Wallace and the late Moderator Rev. J. I. Ross, presiding. Four other members were present. The late Sis. Nealy Sheffield was among the members. At that location, they labored and toiled for three years, and the membership grew.
1941
In 1941, the church moved to a wooden building at 1395 N. W. 69th Street. The late Dea. Albert Jones and the late Mother Mollie Jones united with the church. (Mother Mollie Jones passed away on March 23, 1996).
1942
In 1942, Rev. Wallace resigned. Rev. A. M. Griffin was called and installed as our spiritual leader and served us well. Under his leadership he ordained Deacons:
Willie Roberson | Horrace Ross | Emmitt Ross | Eddie McClain |
Walter Butler | British Tharpe | Stafford Matchett
Charles Foster | Leroy Brooks | Artis Perkin |
Rev. Griffin organized the following Ministries: Deacons Board, Trustee Board, Choirs #1 and #2, Junior Choir, Pastor’s Board, and Willing Workers’ Club. Shortly after 1944, under Rev. Griffin’s leadership, Usher Ministry # 1 was organized with (6) ushers. Thelma Williams was its President.
1958
Due to the growth and progress of the membership, the old building was demolished and a new sanctuary was erected. During that time, we worshipped with Antioch Missionary Baptist Church and various other churches in the area while our new sanctuary was under construction.
1960
In 1960, we marched back into our new sanctuary. At that time, Rev. Griffin changed the name from; Shiloh Baptist Church; to New Shiloh Baptist Church. The body of the church continued to multiply under Rev. Griffin’s administration. The following ministers and deacons served under him:
Reverend:
Elder Walter Butler | Emmitt Ross | Joe Wilmont | James P. Walden |
Robert Brown | Robert Daniel | F. L. Johnson
Deacons:
Albert Jones | Clifford Brown | Tommie Neal
James McDaniel | Thomas Montgomery | George Davis
Alfonso Harmon | Amos Allen | Freeman Davis | (were added) |
1973
On July 3, 1973, the Lord called Pastor A. M. Griffin home from labor to reward. He was a Moses leading God’s people and he had labored untiringly for 31 years. Again, the membership was without a pastor for four months. Deacon Willie Roberson, Chairman of the Deacons and the other members of the Deacons Board labored diligently until December 2, 1973.
1974
The Lord sent us a Joshua to continue leading His people. Rev. Arthur Jackson, Jr. was installed as Pastor on February 24, 1974. Under his leadership, the membership grew by leaps and bounds. Again, the sanctuary was too small. The Pastor, Deacons, and membership agreed to purchase another building.
1983
On January 23, 1983, we marched into our new sanctuary, at 1350 N.W. 95th St. The very next year: that building was destroyed by fire on September 7, 1984, at 1:00 a.m. When Sis. Lillie Linder called *Deacon Daniel Williams, Chairman of the Deacons Board, to let him know that our church was burning; he called Pastor Jackson, who was in California attending the National Baptist Convention. Pastor Jackson caught the next flight out to Miami to tell his people, “We’ll Rise Again!” We have been toiling for 62 years. We have had much heartache but with the help of a gracious God, we have made it. This church has stood the test of the ages and we have come out victoriously. The church is the life of any community. It gives to men a desire to live life at its best.
1987
Through God’s direction another sanctuary was constructed on the same grounds, and we marched into our new sanctuary on March 22, 1987. God continued to bless us with more laborers for His vineyard. Under the leadership of Rev. Arthur Jackson, Jr. the church progressed, and the ministries increased tremendously. Rev. Jackson, Jr. organized and implemented many auxiliaries. Such as: Usher Board #3 and #4, Voices of Shiloh, Hospitality Ministry, Budget Committee, Leadership Workshops, Orientation classes for all new -members, Early Morning First Fellowship Program, Out-Reach Crusaders, Bus Ministry, Convalescent Home Ministry, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and a full-time church staff.
